HISTORY OF DELRAY BEACH
In 1868 William and Sara Gleason purchased thousands of acres of land in what is now the City of Delray Beach. In 1895 the Town of Linton was formed. In those years Atlantic Avenue had partly surrounded a very old orange grove. In 1898, the Town of Linton was changed to "Delray" named after the name of a town located near Detroit, MI. The northern part of Dade County was named Palm Beach County in 1909. And in 1911 the first bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway was built connecting the beach to the mainland and the Town of Delray was created being the land west of the Intracoastal and the Town of Delray Beach was the land east of the Intracoastal. Later in 1927 the two towns became the City of Delray Beach. Wonderful preservation and conservation has prevailed over the years through education and dedication to keeping the art and cultural community alive. Historic landmarks to see while you're here include the Old School Square Cultural Arts Center, Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, Sundy House Inn & Restaurant ( home of Delray Beach's first mayor), Cason Cottage, Colony Hotel, Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens , Delray Beach Tennis Center and across from the beach the Sandoway House Nature Center.
